Caribbean Fine Art Fair – Barbados

CaFAFair celebrates the important contribution of Caribbean visual artists and the increasingly important role that Caribbean art is playing in the international art arena. It is a curated exposition showcasing paintings, photography, sculpture, and drawings by art galleries, institutions and individual artists who will be represented.  Not only will there be works produced in the Islands and parts of Central and South America, but also by artists of Caribbean ancestry living and working in Europe and North America. This event was inspired by the pioneering work of Gloria Gordon and the Caribbean Visions exhibit, which travelled the US in the mid 1990’s, as well as the success of Art Off The Main Art Fair in New York City and its Executive Director, Jamaican gallerist Loris Crawford. The call from artists and cultural entrepreneurs for a definitive art fair based in the Caribbean was also undeniable. The initial venue, Lloyd Erskine Sandiford Conference Center, Barbados, is a proven facility of international quality. CaFA Fair is now held in a fabulous new venue, the refurbished Spirit Bond, in the heart of historic Bridgetown.

While the Caribbean region is known for its pulsating reggae and calypso rhythms, its white sand beaches and spicy cuisine, much remains unknown about the richness of the region’s cultural assets such as its writers, performing and visual artists.  This, in spite of the fact that Caribbean Americans constitute a significant and growing component of America’s population and people of Caribbean ancestry have made significant contributions to the American and European cultural landscape.  The vision of Caribbean Fine Art Fair - Barbados is to become an annual exposition for the appreciation of Caribbean Visual Art and a show that captures the diversity, creativity and the integrity of Caribbean art.  While the visual arts provide that central focus, Caribbean Fine Art Fair - Barbados will be combined with educational programs and stirring cultural events including music, film, theater and fashion.

Caribbean Fine Art Fair - Barbados is planned and produced by a team with extensive experience in marketing fine art; planning and participating in exhibitions and trade shows; creating and executing advertising, sales and public relations campaigns.  The Expo will be marketed through a highly targeted media and direct mail campaign and through strategic alliances with community based organizations and opinion leaders.

Anderson M. Pilgrim

Executive Director

Anderson M. Pilgrim, is a curator and artist representative with over 30 years experience in the performing and visual arts. Mr. Pilgrim grew up on the island of Barbados where he attended Harrison College, and began his career in the arts. During summer 1981 he was part of the stage management of (CARIFESTA) Caribbean Festival of Creative Arts, the preeminent regional arts festival, which was held in Barbados on that occasion. He later attended Baruch College of the City University of New York, graduating with honors in Marketing and Business Management.

Since 1993, as President and founder of Diaspora Now Inc. he has produced dozens of art exhibitions and several other cultural events, showcasing artists from Africa, the Caribbean, Latin America, and the USA. A noted independent curator, Mr. Pilgrim partnered in 1997 with Prof. Thomasenia Myers, SUNY Purchase, as the curatorial team for the Jamaica Art Center of NY’s 25th Anniversary Exhibition. During the mid to late 1990’s he was also director of the exhibition program at Harlem’s Afriworks Gallery.

As US representative for Barbados Investment & Development Corp.’s US Market Development Program from 1999-2008, Mr. Pilgrim has been instrumental in developing and propelling the careers of many of the country’s creative talents in the areas of art, fine craft, and fashion. His booth designs and presentations have won several awards over the years including Best In Show, Manchester Art Show, CT; and The Kuumba Award for Booth Design-First & Second Prizes, International Black Buyers & Manufacturers Expo, Washington DC.

Dr. Gloria Mark Gordon

Director

Dr. Gloria Gordon is the founder and Executive Director of Arts Caribbean, an arts organization that operates both in New York City and the Caribbean.  She was the initiator and Project Consultant for “Caribbean Visions”, a landmark traveling exhibition of Caribbean visual artists funded by the Reader’s Digest/Lila Wallace Foundation.  Between 1995 and 1998 “Caribbean Visions” was seen by over 500,000 and this ground-breaking exhibit was mounted in nine American museums, including the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C., the Wadsworth Athenaeum in Hartford, Connecticut, The New Orleans Museum of Art and the Latin American Museum of Art in Long Beach, CA.

Dr. Gordon received her Ed.D in International Education from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst and has worked in 23 countries in Africa as Education Adviser for Eastern & Southern Africa for UNICEF.  A native of Trinidad & Tobago she has long been associated with the artists of the Caribbean and continues to work unstintingly to bring the work of Caribbean artists into the mainstream of the Contemporary art world.

Loris Crawford

Director

Loris Crawford is the founder of the acclaimed Art Off the Main, a five-year old international art fair that showcases art from Africa, the Caribbean & Latin America and brings over 20 years experience organizing art expositions.

She is the founder of Savacou Gallery, one of the oldest galleries in the United States specializing in African, Caribbean, and African American Art and the Executive Producer of Art Off The Main: African Caribbean & Latin American Art Fair.  Ms. Crawford was responsible for the concept of an African American Pavilion at ArtExpo New York and organized the first such pavilion.  She also spearheaded one of the earliest efforts (the Association of Black-Owned Galleries) to organize and set standards for the marketing of Black art.  Ms. Crawford has lectured extensively on the African-American and Caribbean art movements including at ArtExpo, the National Black Fine Art Show and as a professor at Monroe College and the College of Technology, City University of New York.

Ms. Crawford has been a Professor of Management at Monroe College for 23 years and a Lecturer in Caribbean and African Art at City University of New York.  Her other professional experience includes positions as Economist and Management Analyst for the Government of Jamaica and Marketing Analysis Manager for Reader’s Digest.  She holds a degree in Marketing from Michigan State University, a Master in Business Administration, and a Master of Science degree in Finance from Iona College.

The Directors of Caribbean Fine Art Fair and the Dwyer Cultural Center invite you to attend "An Evening of Art & Elegance" Thursday, November 12, 2015 (NEW DATE), 6-10 pm at the Dwyer Center, 258 St. Nicholas Avenue (at 123^rd Street), New York, NY 10027.  Featured performers for the evening are the Eric Frazier Quintet with vocalists Pamela Cornelius and The Soyemi Sisters. Special guest appearance by K-Jil! The evening will also feature an auction of works donated by prominent visual artists including Ava Tomlinson, Diogenes Ballester, Patricia Brintle, S. Ross Browne, Charles Dey, J.W. Ford, Carl E. Hazelwood, Hedy Klineman, Beatrice Mellinger, Danny Simmons, and others TBA. Tickets are $75 each, including complimentary food and cocktails. Proceeds from "Evening of Art & Elegance" will benefit educational and creative programming at the Dwyer Cultural Center and Caribbean Fine Art Fair Barbados.

Tikhonova-Wintner Gallery in association with CaFA Fair Barbados presents "News from the Islands: 6 Caribbean Printmakers" from November 1, 2015 – January 17, 2016, featuring Diogenes Ballester (Puerto Rico), Pepe Coronado (DR), Francks Francois Deceus (Haiti), Carlos Jesus Martinez Dominguez (DR). From December 3, 2015 – February 3, 2016 the Dwyer Cultural Center in Harlem, NYC, will host “Contemporary Painting & Printmaking: Selections from CaFA Fair Barbados” an exhibition celebrating Caribbean culture, which will feature artwork by Ras Ishi Butcher (Barbados); Patricia Brintle (Haiti); members of the Coronado Print Studio (Dominican Republic); Bernard Hoyes (Jamaica); Jean Patrick Icart-Pierre (Haiti); Jamal Ince (Barbados); Alfredo Isaac (Panama); Hedy Klineman (Barbados); Beatrice Mellinger (Martinique); and Jesma Noel (Grenada); as well as video presentation and interaction with personalities who are shaping its programming.
